Accounting, Economics, and Finance Department Hosts MACPA Professional Issues Update

On Friday, November 20, 2009, the Department of Accounting, Economics, and Finance hosted a four-hour MACPA Town Hall Meeting and Professional Issues Update for over 60 Stevenson accounting alumni and MACPA members. The Professional Issues Update, presented by MACPA’s Executive Director and CEO Tom Hood, covered the major changes happening at the global, national, and state level with new legislation, regulation, and standards. Four Stevenson University students were on the panel.
Senior Dave Grill Obtains WBAL Internship

Senior Business Administration major Dave Grill’s hard work and initiative have paid off in a big way—he has landed a sales and marketing internship for the spring semester with WBAL.
Dave attended one of the many internship fairs offered at Stevenson, when he discovered the position opening. Soon after applying, he was contacted by WBAL and accepted the 12-week spring internship. Dave will be handling and performing many critical business marketing tasks through WBAL, such as competitor analysis, research analysis, creating media kits and sales pitching. Dave’s internship has prepared him to progress forward throughout the New Year and beyond.
Ralph S. Tyler III to Become New General Counsel of U.S. Food and Drug Admininstration

Tyler III, Maryland’s Insurance Commissioner and The Brown School of Business & Leadership’s inaugural Speaker Series speaker from Fall 2009, will be the new general counsel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. MACPA Professional Issues Update for Stevenson Alumni and MACPA Members

On Friday, November 20, 2009, the Department of Accounting, Economics, & Finance will host an MACPA Professional Issues Update (4 hours of CPE) for Stevenson accounting alumni and MACPA members.
This Professional Issues Update, presented by MACPA’s Executive Directorand CEO Tom Hood, will help you make sense of this new world by covering the major changes happening at the global, national, and state level with new legislation, regulation, and standards. Come hear the latest updates on GAAP codification, new tax legislation (federal & state), XBRL, IFRS, Fair Value, and more as we help you keep up with accounting. You will also get the latest updates and review changes in CPA licensing and regulation including CPA exam requirements, new CPE rules, and multistate practice issues.
The event is free to Stevenson alumni and MACPA members.
It will be held in the courtroom of the Brown School of Business from 1:00 – 5:00 pm (Registration begins at 12:30 pm)

Phi Beta Lambda Hosts Internship and Mock Interview Fair

On November 4, 2009, Phi Beta Lambda, a student club focused on developing leadership, communication, and team skills through forging working relationships with business and education, held the annual Internship and Mock Interview Fair in the Rockland Center Conference Room. Over 125 students from all majors participated in the fair, which was supported by 12 exhibitors. During the mock interviews, over 50 students were interviewed by 16 potential employers, many of which have already contacted students for follow-up interviews. The event began with an 8:00 a.m. breakfast, followed by the internship fair from 9:00-11:00 a.m. The day concluded with the mock interviews, which allowed students to receive low-stress, but nonetheless realistic, practice with interviewing.
Business Faculty and Students Attend Conference at Baltimore Word Trade Center

On October 30, 2009, several Stevenson business majors, faculty, and administrators attended the 11th Annual Conference on American Foreign Policy for Maryland College Faculty and Students, at the Baltimore Word Trade Center. Conference presentations were given by David B. Shear, Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, on United States-China Relations; Michael Ratney, Deputy Director and Spokesman, Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs’ Diplomacy Policy Office, on United States Middle East Policy; and William E. Craft, Jr., Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary, Office of Trade Policy and Programs, Bureau of Economic, Energy, and Business Affairs, on United States International Economic Policy. Approximately 30 Stevenson students attended; faculty and administrators in attendance included Dr. Shelton Rhodes, Professor Lynn Duncan, Dr. Ora Freedman, and Dr. Victoria Doby.

On Tuesday, November 10, 2009, the Brown School of Business and Leadership held a Speaker Series panel discussion entitled: “How the economic downturn has impacted the role of Human Resource Management.” Panel participants included Michael Powichroski, Vice President and Client Services Consultant for Right Management; Brenda Balzar, Vice President for Human Resources at Stevenson University; and Jeanne Uphouse, Former Managing Director of Provident Bank.
Internship Coordinator and Students Attend MAP Gala

On Thursday, November 5, 2009, Internship Coordinator and past MAP President Cynthia Macsherry and Justice Society members Sarah Sawyer, Brianna Seekford, Eloise Hanley, Lyle Hartranft, and Sarah Stocker attended Maryland Association of Paralegal’s 35th Anniversary Gala at the Sheraton Columbia Hotel. The keynote speaker was Karen Cook, Esq., director of the Maryland State Bar Association’s Special Committee on Paralegals and of the Legal Studies Institute at Anne Arundel Community College. The evening celebrated MAP’s 35 years of service to the legal community.

Legal Studies Faculty and Staff Attend AAfPE’s National Conference

From October 28-October 31, 2009, Legal Studies faculty members Hillary Michaud and Melanie Snyder, and staff member Cynthia Macsherry attended the 28th Annual American Association for Paralegal Education’s National Conference. This year’s conference, entitled the 21st Century Paralegal, emphasized ever-developing technology, the varying ways to communicate, and the necessity for a wider global perspective in teaching. There were pre-conference workshops, fifty educational sessions, and dozens of vendors.
